Puracane

“They are Radiohead’s ‘Amnesiac,’ minus the Thom, plus the Ali Rogers.” – Culture Shock

Fronted by Ali Rogers’ strong yet soothing alto, New York trip-hop band Puracane’s music combines flowing, hypnotic electronics with more organic sounds from string and percussion instruments. Though the band has performed in various incarnations since its start in 1999, Puracane today consists of Rogers (vocals), Juan Masotta (guitar/electronics), Chris Lee (bass), Uka Gameiro (drums), and, at live shows, Hannah Thiem of the band Copal (violin).

Puracane’s engaging sophomore album, I’ve Been Here The Longest, uses echoed chants (“Daylight”), clean guitar riffs (“All Over Now”), and vocal effects (“Riddle Me This”). Puracane’s lyrics are as enchanting as the music behind them: Album opener and first single “God Can Make You Pay” is about the illusion that people are in control of what they do and the “we make plans and God laughs” concept, says Rogers, noting that it’s not necessarily about “God,” but more so the idea that you reap what you sow. And while “God” takes a more lighthearted approach, “All Over Now” is about the darker side of Rogers’ past. “It’s funny,” she says. “When you’re partying so much it’s such a dark time.”

I’ve Been Here The Longest was recorded in various locations throughout New York and also features drum work from Andrew “Griff” Griffiths of New York’s BM Linx (who also remixed “God Can Make You Pay”). BM Linx’s frontman, Tony Diodore, also provided violin on I’ve Been Here The Longest and co-wrote the song “Watershed.” In addition to her work with Puracane, Rogers and Gameiro play in the Blondie tribute band The Blondest.

Puracane has played with artists including Sting, Duran Duran, Jane’s Addiction, and Depeche Mode, and their music has been featured in the film Driven (Sly Stallone), and on the TV shows Smallville, Felicity, Las Vegas, Road Rules, Real World, and Making the Band. They have been compared to Massive Attack, Lamb, Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Björk, and Radiohead.
