New York City based artist Todd Carter blends his talents as a singer, producer, composer, and Indie label owner. His musical roots started in Indiana in his parents’ garage with The Bluko Chiptones and grew through the experimental/noise band Spaceship Beelzebub and the indie-folk band The Brothers Blessit. His diverse taste in music is evident both in his personal body of work and in the artists represented on his label, Astraea Records. Todd’s company and artistry varies from Americana to Trip Hop, from New Wave to Electro-Acoustic.
Todd’s solo project, The Looking, blends indie pop with country twinges on the latest release, Cabinet of Curiosities. His voice, which has been compared to a blend of Morrissey meets Roy Orbison, gleams over compositions that highlight acoustic and 12-string guitars, occasional country twangs, and pedal steel guitar. Lyrically, Carter is winding his way through a series of love songs.

Originally from Carmel, Indiana, Todd Carter’s youth found him drawn to the sounds of the Smiths, Modern English and T Rex. While a student at Indiana University, he was exposed to Bloomington’s fertile jazz and classical scene, as well as the city’s many local folk musicians. After experimenting with vocals, percussion and production, he attended the University of Chicago’s Divinity School where he studied the history of Christianity and philosophy. Between classes he would experiment with recording and he birthed the fist of two Parmidian One records. This was also the beginning of a full and productive career as a musician, writer and producer.
Carter relocated to New York City in 2000 and enrolled in the Mannes School of Music and studied voice with the Metropolitan Opera’s Edna Lind. His experiences with several genres of music has enabled him to bring new perspectives, blends and interpretations to both his own art as well as many other songwriters.
